Lionel 6-38031 Southern Pacific AC-9 #3809 On a railroad known for oil burners and cab-forwards, the coal burning Southern Pacific AC-9 class proved to be quite a unique motive power fleet. On the tunnel-free and coal- rich Rio Grande Division, a conventional design was needed, so the railroad flipped the wheel arrangement of its successful 4-8-8-2 creating a "backward" cab forward. In 1939, twelve of the Lima-built 2-8-8-4s began hauling heavy freight and passenger consists on the Rio Grande Division. Producing 6000 horsepower, they streaked across the Southwest at a top speed of 75 miles per hour. This new scale-sized model represents the first time that this significant articulated locomotive has ever been modeled in die-cast O gauge. The new Southern Pacific AC-9 has a long list of some of the latest Lionel features such as an improvedOdyssey System for speed control with ON/OFF switch and synchronized smoke.
